What AI personalization changes for players, and for marketing

PRISM · 3 min read

Games now adapt to each player. A research project read that shift through three theories and asked what it means for marketing.

The question

Difficulty, offers, content and timing now shift with a player's behaviour. The research asked what that does to engagement, retention and monetization in gaming, and what marketers should take from it.

Three lenses

Self-Determination Theory looks at autonomy, competence and relatedness: does the adaptation leave the player in charge, feeling capable and connected? Flow Theory asks whether challenge stays in balance with skill. The Technology Acceptance Model asks whether the player finds the system useful and easy to accept, because adaptation that feels manipulative is neither.

What it means for marketing

Personalization works when it serves the person's own motivation and backfires when it only serves the funnel. The same test applies outside gaming: a recommendation, an offer or a reminder earns its place when the person would have chosen it anyway, only faster. That is the line between helpful and intrusive, and it is where measurement should sit.

How we use it

This thinking sits behind the data and AI work at PRISM: personalize and automate where it creates real value for the person on the other side, keep people in charge of the decisions that matter, and measure whether it helped.
